'Blossom' the possum is a little girl I met at Kanyana Wildlife. Her real name is 'Uandi', meaning beautiful, though she’s lovingly known as Blossom too.
She arrived at Kanyana in 2021 after being confiscated, along with six other possums, by the DBCA due to unsuitable enclosure conditions. Because she had become too friendly to safely return to the wild, Blossom now lives permanently at Kanyana, where she is cared for and adored.
Her painting is inspired by her name and her gentle nature, as she “blossoms” from loose abstraction into refined realism. Painted in watercolour and created entirely live at events, the artwork allowed the public to witness her emerging form layer by layer.
Brushtail possums are one of Australia’s more familiar native marsupials, yet they face many challenges in the wild, from habitat loss to human conflict. Through this painting, we celebrate 'Blossom' and the incredible care Kanyana provides to animals like her.
